Method 1: Evaluate Outcomes (Human Centered Design Toolkit, pg 148)

Method Evaluate Outcomes is a method mostly is used for human centered design, service design. It takes an important role in learning cycle. It is used at the end of concepts and solution generating stage to evaluate and benchmark the posibility of impacts, consequence affect on the main theme and relative stakeholders within the system, that the project is designed for.Therefore, the designer could understand their capacibility to adjust their invest efficiently and nevigate proper direction to achive project’s goal.

The method is a chain of iterative processes of gathering reflection, contribution, evaluation of the outcome, mostly from the customers, end users. The achivement will be resourceful to all participants who involve in the project, as be used as a continuation of design and study along side the project. Generally, the method should be mapped and apply Actor Networking method to analyze the relationships between the impacts and project stake holders to generate solution, and innovation for the problems.

The method is useful for project manager, planner to understand and rearrange a plan the next phase of design project. However, it should be applied before implementation stage in the case of object design to avoid wasting resource. Otherwise, cooperation and listening from co-worker also be crucial in practicing the method.

This arcticle “Outcome Mapping” provide a further detail, diferrent ways of Evaluation Outcomes and step to practice the method effieciently.


Robert Penna and William Phillips from the Rensselaerville Institute’s Center for Outcomes provide eight models for applying outcome-based thinking in 3 main fields; Program Planning/Management Tools, Program and Resource Alignment Tools, Program Reporting Tools and futher details analysis of their strong points and expecting purpose for each Oucome Model.

Method 2: Observation research (interviewed by Huynh Du Tai, 4th year Industrial Design Student, student ID: s3307958)

Tai said, he has 3 main methods of design, and in this review  will discuss about his method ‘Observation research’. From the viewpoint of Tai,  he indicated “My design research project is based on user-centred design which means that the project outcome will be created depended on my understanding of users. The process will take a period time from observation user activities to making a prototype follow their requirement.

The good point of these methodologies is to provide me feedback of user on design concept. I will be able to have information to create a better concept.”

This information also be supported by Tai “Observation research is a type of correlational research where examiner vision is used to record ongoing behaviour (Adler, 1987). There are a variety of types of observational research, such as model observation, 9D observation and AEOUT observation. Each of them has both strengths and weaknesses, so depending on the situation researcher will have the best option matching with the scenario. Observational research is particularly prevalent in the social sciences and in marketing. It is a social research technique that involves the direct observation of spectacles in their natural setting.”

Arcording to those information from Tai, this method of design may be used mostly for social, service design and partly for product design. However, product design may be hard to approach as it may easily be violated the Intellectual Properties and take time to make design project be distintive from observated one. In addition, Observation research is a good way to design ,develop and build the services, soft design product (software, multi-media) base on the database from observation.

Method 3: Rapid prototyping (reviewed from Studio Around Sound, RMIT, Sem 1, 2015)

Rapid prototyping is a method design for human-centered design. The method is based on the theory of learning through making experience. By quickly translating designed idea through prototype on various platforms, such as Story board, Role Playing, Models, Mock-ups; to achieve and test fundamental ideas relate to designed topic, and share these tangible ideas to the people, who will receive the final outcome of designed project; to achive their feedback. Those iterative activities will be used to develop, learn and improve designed idea before prototype them.

The advantage of this method is it grant designers direct sense of their ideas in physical and easy to share and obtain the developing feedback from their peers, customers and nevigate development want and plan for next stage.


In project meditative instrument of Around Sound Studio, this method is useful for quickly generating different ideas of the interspace and allow designer to pre interact with its working platform of the design, this could help designer quickly track down idea’s limitations, error or identify better designed, technical solution for the project at design and development stage. On the other hand, this method help designer group enough their ideas in the right track and avoid wasting of money and resource in prototyping stage.

Industrial school



A0-A3 carton box, 0.6 mm disposal polysterene sheet, cardboard, 125 mgs paper from Melbourne Artist Supply, 0.6 mm scrap galvaninize sheet and 0.1 scrap brass sheet . Hot glue gun, double tape and heavy stapler.


This art piece present the relationship between Australiawith 7 most Australian influenced Asian countries, China, India, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.

There are 5 ring around the central 7th golden star, which is covered by 7 Australian symbolic creatures, human, kangaroo, koala, crocodile, Tasmania devil and Emu. The rings present the culture, food, religion, language, population and geographic of the related Asian countries. At the edge of the board, there are 4 stars that form the southern cross star. The sticks on each ring look generally give the people how they twist together and make to viewer.

The meaning:

The meaning is I want to make the people interact, rotate the ring and hold to edge of the cut off on the ring you want to look,  you will see the change, with the idea of how Asian values contribute to enrich a multi colourful Australia, in different areas, and how they twist together in different levels, that show depth of the relationship I mention in my artwork.

Editorial ideas

1)The lacking of natural resource force Japanese industry have to import or putting their factory, facilities in different regions in Asia. Where it could cause environmental impacts to the local people and the environment.

2) Being one of the world’s leading design countries for a long period with only its self power. It is very hard for a foreign designer to enter a Japanese company. That may reduce the chance of Japan in a more open world where the differences between nations is more smaller than in the past.

3) The threat of nuclear war and civil war in Korea may break out any time and threat the Asian’s security and world. The question is what design could do to avoid that risk and ensure the world peace.

4) The Australian is closer to Asia than the other Western countries. It also a continental nation with its own history. The modern Australia is strongly influenced by Asian culture after its precessor Western, so what is Australia’s own design style? How can it could stand out on the world with its own design value?

5) Korea and Japan are investigating the massive factories in many South East Asian, that is a great changes for the region. But is it ensure the quality, its fame if in the future its design is influenced by local design?

New research

I found the the technique how wrap the knot for Japanese legend sword katana’s handle and the technique how to make the Turkish heat knot. It is ideal for wrapping, decorating and it is used in decorated the military officer’s uniform.

Summary of The future of human spirit

Overall, the articles mentioned the how important the design in the human’s past, present and future. How it is affect the foundation, development of a nation. The articles also mention the complexity relationship between the nations changed from geopolitics, race ethnic to another form, which the design played as the main role in making the differences.

The article show a concern of the human’s future, when the new value will replace old value under the change of social, environment, technology and environment. The writer fear the human will become the past for rise of the more advance form on this world. The article provides some examples of the current achievements as the evidence of how the previous classes of designers predicted and made.  And also state the current trend of human’s future will be, where the product design, code writer and service design plays as the main reactor to form the future world.

The article ends with the statement that state the current designers are the key factor that affects how the future is, how it affect the human’s fate in the changeable future to get a right direction of our future base on the way we live at this moment.

Selected design of Japan

Project: Floating vases/Ripple

Designer: Taku Omura

1) Innovation

Most flower vase are make in cylinder shape and put on the table for inner house use or outside uses. But nobody think about a floating vase and so futuristic and fantastic like this design. It is very aesthetic and unordinary compare to the other same type product.


2) Cultural Relevance

This design is very familiar the Japanese garden art, especially the stream, water and pond in this art. It does have the nature, flows of nature (water), simple and purify within it.


On the other hand, if counted the five elements of Fengsui, this design is special. According to the five element theory, the water born the the wood/ plant, this design doesn’t content water, but it is almost invincibly and make the illusion of water surround the flower branch as supporting the plant, overall this make the users have a feeling of purify, well being, supporting. This is special, because it look the water touch but does not touch.


3) Style

There are the factor of in and out of design for the floating vases. Bases on Ram’s principles and element of industrial designs, it contains the factors of aesthetic, simple, long last (acrylic is a very strong and light weight), and small.

This design present the characteristics of Japanese garden art also the Fengsui’s properties with futuristic and fantastic factor (floating, simply, and purify)

4) Design process

Base on the abstractive image of the ripple on the water surface, Omura made a vase from acrylic. When put it on a fist tank a water tank it will be almost invisible. There will be a very fantasy scenery when the user put the flowers on the vase, they will look like they are floating on the water.

Eco urinal

1) Innovation

This design is a combination of toilet and bath tub, It is simple, geometric, and look very futuristic but realistic. Base on  Geekologgie’s comment:

The dirty sink water is used to flush the urinal, so the tree huggers will like the way it saves the water. It also take up a lot less room than a separate sink and urinal, so they can fit more into a small bathroom reducing the waiting times. Additionally the sink is right there, this might also encourage less hygienically inclined to wash up.

This design also break the traditional way of using toilet, more convenient and more friendly environment are the innovative points for this design.


2) How it solve the water problem


This design, indeed could help the world save a lot of water, therefore could save million of lifes, and ensure the better future for our limited water resources.
Base on the The institute for human rights and businesses, there are still be 2.5 billion people without sanitation  and 783 million without water. Therefore if we can save water for flushing, we could make a revolution for this problem.

In additionally, base on the trend of world population, there will be more people concentrate to the cities in near future. Get more living space is also an emergent problem. And this design is a key for this buy reducing the ordinary toilet by half.  

3) Cultural Rellevance

This design, in my opinion, it is may have impacts from Chinese zodiac and also the the Fengsui’s factor.

Yin and Yang is considered as the balance of universe, positive and negative energy, even within them also contain the properties of the other side to make the balance. So I think this design shows that theory.


People pee out to take away the negative disposal from the body and wash hand to refresh and clean their body. While the toilet, which is very dirty, receive water from washing hand activities as flushing to clean it. This form almost like a circle.


Additionally, base on Wuxing or five elemental theory of Fengsui. There are five elements support each other and also conflict each other. The water born the metal base on that theory, so this design base on the Fengsui’s theory is well supported and it is a good design overall.

4) This design style

The design style is geometrical, modern style. Which is impress the white and shinning silver colour of metal and glass. And it is  applied almost the 10 principles and elements of Ram Dieter. The design is simple, small, useful, environmental friendly and honest.However this only for male users, it need more for female users to access this design.

5) Design process

Yeeongwoo Kim, the designer:

“To save water, Eco Urinal is designed to use the water that was used for washing hands to flush the urine.
By this process, we don’t have to use water twice after using the urinal.
Moreover, it reduces the establishment expenses by optimizing the materials.
Upper space of this urinal is made with glass, and it helps to secure a clear view for users.
It also promotes people to keep their sanitation because people need to wash their hands to flush the urine after use.”

Stuart, today research

Reflection of class

This is my first design studies class of the first semester of Industrial Design Course. Throught the first difficulties I got after making my decision of transferring from Architecture Course to Industrial Design. I have never joined any class like this before. The class was in an big space. The lecture was very friendly. And I met people from different places on the world.

In this class, I learned about the “change”. At first, it was hard to understand, because what I learned, I felt it didn’t relate any thing to the Industrial Design. By the time I learned that this class help me to control my creative mind to make the change, to design the changed for the society. The way Iearned in class also change my view point of how to learn in traditional class. Students sit in class, table, desks and the lecture just stand on the board and talk, talk. In this class, I learn how to use the advantages of E studying system by using the social network as the place toexhange the knowledge, the lesson between my classmates and my lectures. It was the first time I have known how to use WordPress, Twitter. The way the lectures perform in class was great, they tried to interact with the students, they invited cake and candy to students to make a friendly atmostphere and futhermore they demonstrate a great saying in my home town “Có thực thì mới vực được đạo” (when you are full, you can learn  more). I like this change in this class.

Maybe I was the student, who joined the class after the beginning 3 weeks, so I may missed some lessons. But I also learned the new one from the other lessons. I knew how to use the infographic as a visual language to present a topic to make people understand my ideas,there fore make a new change. The next lesson I learned was how to work together with the others in a group to make the change of a problem. During this activities, I learned the way of group sharing a topic in to many sections, how to research and make a scenarios to transmit my ideas to the target audiences by visual lannguages, narative skills.

I figured out the relation ship between activism and and industrial design. The activism try to find the disadvantageous of the reality and find the better solution to make it better, therefore that become the motivation for an industrial designer work out to make a new better thing. I think in this class the target is the what society’s need,what the new trend of society, the skill how catch up the new trend of the society through social network and the way how I transfer my ideas of changing. In short, before designing something, the understanding of the chosen targets is very important and need many steps to do it

So one semester was over, in my opinion, I may got many problem and mistakes during this semester, but I think those mistakes could be the good experiences to make the change in next semester.
